UBS Origami Video Shoot

Every year the multinational investment bank UBS creates a year ahead report.  This gives them a chance to inform their investors about the things they are most focused on for the coming year.  And each year they try and show the information in a new and interesting way.  This year they got in touch with Taro’s Origami to bring their artistic vision to life.

Similar to our Lexus shoot a few years ago, this required a senior artist on site.  That way the artist could fold on demand to make sure it all fit in place.  Here is a behind-the-scenes look at how the Taro’s team figured out how to create the display on time with dramatic results.

1: BRAINSTORMING

First The Taro’s team talked with Rally On media team overseeing the shoot.  They had a few AI generated images to show the overall look of the event that they wanted to get across.  After a quick zoom call to make sure everyone was on the right page, the team got to work.

2: MODEL DESIGN

From there the Taro’s designers seperated the projects into 2 different parts.  The first part was creating the specific required shapes for the project, like a globe, arrows, lightening, and more.  The second part was to find background shapes that would be interesting visually, but not enough to draw focus from the rest of the video.  It was a process of trial and error, but in the end Senior Designer Frank Ling settled on deconstructed bird bases to populate the background.

3: INSTALLATION

Next came the day of filming.  To begin, the production company and Frank went over all the shapes and confirmed the ones to use on camera.  Then Frank got to work folding all day the build out the origami world.  From there the production company figured out the best way and placement for rigging all of the models for the correct moments in the video.

4: FINAL DISPLAY

Here is a look a the space during filming.  You can see the final placements of the models and also how the whole thing came together.  Then watch the final video from UBS and see how it all looked in the final render!
