This summer, Taro Yaguchi, renowned origami artist and founder of Taro’s Origami Studio—the world’s largest origami studio with locations in New York and Tokyo—will contribute his work to the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival 2025, the largest flower show in the world.

About the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival

The RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival, organized annually by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) since 1993, is recognized as the world’s largest flower show. Held in the historic gardens of Hampton Court Palace, just 40 minutes from central London, the festival attracts more than 120,000 visitors each year.

This prestigious event showcases the latest in gardening trends, innovative garden design, and sustainable horticultural practices. It receives broad coverage in major UK media outlets, including BBC and ITV, and is attended by top garden designers, passionate plant lovers, and industry experts from around the world.

Where Origami Meets Garden Design

From July 1 to July 6, 2025, as part of a special exhibition titled “For the Love of Lamiaceae”, Taro Yaguchi will collaborate with garden designers Shadwell Williams Design Studio and Price Adams Studio to create 100 waterproof origami hummingbirds.

The exhibit highlights the evolutionary relationship between pollinators and Lamiaceae plants, such as Salvia and Monarda, which are known for attracting hummingbirds with their nectar-rich red and orange blossoms. Yaguchi’s life-size origami hummingbirds—each capturing a different wing position—will be installed throughout the garden, vividly simulating the birds darting among the flowers. The oval and curving shapes of the garden bed were inspired by the graceful flight paths of hummingbirds.

Creating Outdoor-Ready Origami

Because the origami will be displayed outdoors, durability was essential. Yaguchi used special waterproof paper, allowing the hummingbirds to retain their delicate beauty while withstanding the elements. The result is a collection of elegant, weatherproof sculptures that seamlessly blend into the garden space.
